Photography Tips For The Show From Our Official Show Photographer.
01/04/2010

The East Anglian Game and Country Fair is a prime event for the budding photographer to try out their creative ability and capture some wonderful images. Some areas allow for close access to the action - particularly the Countryside Arena, Dock Dogs and Forestry. Check out the schedules for the activities and shows but bear a couple of things in mind to avoid disappointing results.

Avoid common photo mistakes, such as underexposure (not enough light) or overexposure (too much light), red-eye, and blur, by simply taking the time to think about your picture before you take it

Correct lighting can prevent many photo flaws, including red-eye. However, evaluating ideal lighting goes beyond determining if your setting is "too bright" or "too dark." Take these additional considerations into account before taking the picture:

Blurry photos (photos that are out of focus) are usually the result of your camera moving or shaking, or a subject in motion.

To avoid a blurry photo, think about what your subject is doing-or will be doing-in the photo:

  • Is my subject in motion?
  • Will my subject be in motion?
  • Should I shorten my shutter speed?
  • Should I check to see if my camera features an Action mode?
  • Should I steady my camera by using a tripod or by bracing myself against a sturdy object?
  • Does my camera feature Auto Focus? Do I need to activate it?

Lighting & Direction

  • Light coming from behind your subject will silhouette them.
  • Flash in your subject's eyes at night may also result in red-eye.

Intensity

  • Overcast days tend to yield ideal, even lighting.
  • Bright light can wash out your subject and diminish details within the photo.
  • Light that is too dim can cause your photo to appear muddy or grainy.

Plan your route around the fair, particularly if you are carrying a bag full of equipment or take a break at one of the many mouth watering food and drink stalls en route and take time to review your pictures, deleting the ones that don't make the grade and making space for the next award winning picture that presents itself!
